International Sports Federation FISU
Universities in the USA, England and Switzerland were already organising international sports events for students by the beginning of the 19th century. The International University Sports Federation FISU was founded in 1949. FISU is based in Lausanne and now has 174 member federations, including Swiss University Sports.

FISU has organised Universiade events at two-year intervals since 1959. Each uneven year a Winter Universiade as well as a Summer Universiade are held.
The event has been held in Switzerland just once before: Villars in Canton Valais was the venue of the second Winter Universiade in 1962.
